Education: Graduated in Physics at the University of Trieste in 1958 with full marks and honour. Research interests: Elementary Particle Theoretical Physics (phenomenology of weak and strong interactions, spontaneous symmetry breaking of conformal invariance and classical solutions, supersymmetry and path integrals). - Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (dynamics of upper Ocean and Atmospheric Physics ). - Renewable Energies (photovoltaic conversion). Biography: 1968 - present: Full professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Trieste (teaching activities included in the past: Mathematical Methods of Physics, Elementary Particle Physics, Statistical Mechanics, Quantum Field Theory; teaching at present: Quantum Field Theory and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics). 1962 - 1965: Research fellow at the Theory Division of CERN. 1967 - 1980: Visiting professor at several Universities in USA (Stony Brook, Ann Arbor, Institute for Advanced Study - Princeton among others) and in Europe (CERN, Paris, Vienna, Zagreb). 1969 - 1981: Director of the Department of Theoretical Physics at the University of Trieste. 1972 - 1978: Chairman of the National INFN Committee for Theoretical Particle Physics. Collaborations: He has been collaborating with the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics since its inception (1964), initially for Particle Physics activities and subsequently in the field of Environmental Sciences and Renewable Energies, organizing at ICTP a regular and vigorous programme of Workshops and Conferences. In 1983 prof. Furlan initiated the TRIL (Training and Research in Italian Laboratories) Programme, one of the successful achievements of ICTP in the last years. Such Programme gives scientists of the Third World, Central and Easten Europe, the opportunity to spend periods from a few months to one year at Italian research institutions in different branches of physics and has been instrumental in establishing fruitful research links between the scientific communities of Italy and Developing Countries. Among the founders and President (1987 - 2001) of CETA (Center for Theoretical and Applied Ecology) in Gorizia, which is involved in several projects concerning environmental applications. Prof. Furlan is a member of the Italian Physical Society, the European Physical Society and the International Solar Energy Society . He is Associate Fellow of TWAS. Prof. Furlan has co-authored more than 80 papers, some of these of remarkable impact in Particle Physics, published in international scientific journals and two books. He is also the editor of several Proceedings of Courses and Conferences on Environmental Physics subjects. Papers published in the last 5 years.
